Narratives In The Online Space That Probably Aren’t Serving You
My business hasn’t always been sunshine and rainbows…. in fact it’s had its fair share of shit show moments lol.
Looking back, I know that at each point in my journey as an entrepreneur I was just trying my best and doing what I thought was right - but now that I’ve scaled past 6-figures and have been doing this for years, I know which narratives really steered me wrong. Ya live and ya learn.
And hey, different strokes for different folks. Maybe these things work for some people…but I don’t think they’re any kind of realistic and honestly, I think they’re borderline harmful.
Let’s get into it.
1. You always need to be making more money/scaling
This just isn’t true. It’s okay to have periods where your income isn’t growing…and it’s also okay if your goal is smaller than some of your peers.
The idea that we constantly have to be scaling is taking away from so much enjoyment in the journey, and often causes us to neglect gratitude because we’re always expecting bigger and better things.
2. You’re always the expert….even if you’re new
This is something that I realized recently was actually soooo harmful. This narrative puts so much unnecessary stress and pressure on newer entrepreneurs and can potentially worsen imposter syndrome or cause burnout - either of which could turn someone off of the online space who would otherwise be a super successful entrepreneur.
3. One single mentor is standing between you and success
I can’t believe we even need to talk about this lol. Just no.
Any coach or mentor who makes it seem like their program is the only way to success gives me the ick. Steer clear.
4. You don’t need to show up in order to make a lot of money
To me, this is an extremely entitled approach to business. If you want to have an online community who trusts you and buys from you repeatedly - the least you can do is show up and serve them.
*this isn’t implying that you should be doing so 24/7…but consistency is key here.
5. Your business should be your #1 passion
My #1 passion is drinking margaritas on the beach. BFFR.
If you’re passionate enough to stay consistent and disciplined and know that your business is going to give you the life you desire, then that’s enough for me.
